Interesting Comment into my queue.

“First of all congratulation for such a great site. I learned a lot reading article here today. I will make sure i visit this site once a day so i can learn more.”

Which sounds innocuous right? Thanks for the comment reader! WooHoo! But something sounds fishy. I don’t write daily. That post wasn’t fresh. Benefit of the dout.. are you human? Do I need to do a Voight-Kampff test? Q: You’re watching television. Suddenly you realize there’s a wasp crawling on your arm. What do you do?

The probability of this question, in full length, showing up on google would be one in a billion. Actually probably bigger. So I googled it. See for yourself. If it shows up on google like that, it isn’t a unique or adding anything, and doesn’t belong here.

Smart Document Synchronization and Backup aka: Life in the Cloud

Filed under: HOWTO, System, Utility — Dan @ 08:00

I have an interesting model for maintaining synchronized, versional documents of things I am working on.

On any Mac or Windows machine I own, I can edit a document and have the changes enacted on other machines connected to the internet with little to no user interaction. Furthermore, I have a 30 day cycle of redundant copies in case I accidentally delete a file or edit something I don’t want edited. Finally, I have a networked, hardware raid array which decouples some hardware risks regarding the local copies.

It isn’t like I do anything THAT interesting or mission critical. I spent a little time thinking about this problem and ways to mitigate risks. It has some tradeoffs, and most of them I’m ok with. YMMV.

Lets get on with some diagrams after the break. (more…)

Change Default Location of My Documents Folder on XP

Filed under: HOWTO, Tiny Annoyances, Windows — Dan @ 08:00

This is a 2 second fix which will save you time and annoyance if you, like 90% of the users of Windows XP I know, store your documents somewhere else. You can take it two steps further and create a fully redundant and multi-computer environment if your so inclined as well. More on that later.

Every time I open a document, I noticed myself navigating through folders. I’m repeating this action every time I open a new document. Wasted time!

Many reasons exist to relocate the My Documents folder. I like to set up windows machines with a relatively small partition on the main drive, say 50 GB, and the rest goes as files for User Space. I never know what user I might be in, or if another user on my system wants access to My Documents. Finally, if I’m coding, I hate digging through the user folder layers if I have to write some code on the command line. All Tiny Annoyances, all fixable.

I’m being a little tedious here, but I see no excuse for lack of clarity.

  1. I create a new folder or find the existing folder I wanna make into the default location for My Documents.
  2. Copy the location into your clipboard.. Keyboard: (CTRL-C)
  3. If your “My Documents” is on your desktop, right click on it. It may also be lurking in the start menu. Find one of the 10 places it lurks, and right click on it. Go to Properties
  4. Click on the textbox called Target, and paste. Keyboard (CTRL-V)
  5. Click OK.

Boom. Your done. You saved a few seconds every time you open a document.
